Mayan 2012

There are a lot of glyphs starting to float around the internet supposedly representing the Mayan 2012. Most are wrong. I believe the image to your left to be correct. Look at the image. There are only three placeholders in use on this glyph. The leftmost represents the number 5. The middle represents the number 0. The last respresents the number 12.

There are only three symbols used in the Mayan mathematics - a shell representing zero, a dot representing one (and multiples), and a line or bar representing 5 (and multiples). Furthermore the Mayan math is a vigesimal (base 20) math system, as opposed to the western decimal (base 10) system.

In short, each placeholder in the decimal system increases by a factor of 10 (1,10,100,1000…) whereas in the Mayan mathematical system each placeholder increases by a factor of 20 (1,20,400,8000…). A vigesimal system is actually more appropriate for computers based mostly on the fact you can store bigger numbers in a smaller space. You can see this in the glyph - there are three place holders representing 2012 as opposed to four in the decimal system. This really starts making a difference when you are working with larger numbers - millions, billions and bigger.

So going back to the image we see there are three placeholders in use. Breaking down the decimal 2012 we have symbolically the following:

2 multiplied by 1000……(2000) added to
0 multiplied by 100……..(0) added to
1 multiplied by 10………(10) added to
2 multiplied by 1…………(2) equals = 2012

The vigesimal system breaks down the same number as:

5 multiplied by 400……..(2000) added to
0 multiplied by 20………(0) added to
12 multiplied by 1……..(12) equals 2012

Some people believe the Mayan math system is base 20 because of the number of fingers and toes we have, which would have been used for counting. Others believe the Maya inherited their math system from an older, more advanced race - a race that actually made use of larger mathematical calculations.  By the way, an interesting point to note about the Mayan math system is it’s use of the number zero. The Maya made use of zero over a 1000 years before the appearance of zero in European cultures.

So let’s all get on the same page and start representing the Mayan 2012 via it’s native vigesimal system.

The nr. zero was invented independently in India and
by the Maya. In India a decimal system was used, like
ours, but they used an empty space for zero up to 3rd
Century BC. This was confusing for an empty space was
also used to separate numbers, and so they invented
the dot for a zero. The first evidence for the use of
the symbol that we now know as zero stems from the 7th
century AD. The Maya invented the number zero for
their calendar in the 3rd century AD.

do u think the world is really guna end?

no the world is not going to end but a major and historical change is going to happen that would change our society completely and i believe that it is for good

I do not think that the world will end in 2012 because if you read in the bible it says that nobody knows the exact date of when the world will end. I do believe that something will happen to the world but i do not believe it will be the end of salvation.

Nobody does no when it will end. By believing that it can’t end on 2012, you are simply saying that it might, because you didn’t know it would happen. Think of this:
A man is told that he will be hanged some time during the next week, and that it will be a suprise what day it is on. He knows that he cannot be hung on sunday, because if he wasn’t hung on saturday, he wouldn’t be suprised at being hung on sunday. In the same way he knows he can’t be hung on saturday, because if he hasn’t been hung by the end of friday, and he knows that he can’t be hung on sunday, then he will know that he must be hung on saturday. In this way, he can work back, eliminating every day of the week. He concludes that since there is no day that it wouldn’t be a suprise, he will not be hung. He is hung anyway, and that is the suprise.

I’m not saying that the world will end. I personally believe that it won’t. I’m just saying that not knowing when it will end makes it possible for it to end at any time.

I don’t believe that this is going to happen because the world has been around for more that 4 billion years and its not going to happen on this date. DONT BELIVE IT cause it not gonna happen. Yes, there will be a 2012 AND then a 2013 and on and on and on. I AGREE EXACTLY WHAT AUSTIN SAID.

THE WORLD IS GOING TO END IN 2012!!!!! :O:O:O:O:O
    so BEWARE!! …..

may all human beings be at peace..

“End of The World” can mean many things. Being predicted by HUMANS it could apply only TO humans.. like some extra-terrestrial virus or the like. It could also mean a complete destructive breakdown of society (as we all know is fiercly possible) Something might wipe all life off the planet, or the most exciting end being the removal of the planet from our galaxy. We as humans have and are leaning more and more towards the acute science and technology side of life, rather than the sacred and spiritual side.
I watched a show about the Gods and how they create life and then decide they dont like it and start over (a new CYCLE)

so maby we have lost connection with the Gods and now they want to start over. the cycle is finished in 2012. seems pretty beleivable to me. better get those crystal skulls together :)

    also one last thing-

unless you know everything in the whole universe and its dimensions, one cannnot say that something is “impossible”

most ppl dont think this far outside the box. (i.e planet earth)

yes probability applies TO AN EXTENT.

I have a question… The mayans were not christians, therefore did not go by our current calendar. So, how did they get the date 2012? Which calendar were they using?

  12. Zodaik said:

as Toro saied this is all a cicrcle after 2012 will start gloden era of earth that means position of earth on our galaxy milky way will be in better positon.
thay were using their calendar that some how they did it or take from some other intelegent species. world wont end in 2012 maybe 5/6 of people will die to and the survivors will start the new era.

The world will not end on December 21 2012, however something catostrophic will happen. There is too much evidence leading to this to think nothing will happen. The Mayas, Hindu, Chinese, Nostrodamous, and Edgar Casey predicted this event. Edgar Casey is a man that got a power to predict the future. He predicted World war two, 9/11 and so on. I believe there will be huge flood, earthquakes, volcano eruptions, and more this will cause over half of the population of the world to die out. However I have no right to predict the future or tell you what to believe.

wow. u guys really miss the point.
if any of u had watched star trek the voyage home, u would know that the whales will go extinct and leave our would defenseless from the destructive forces of the nabu.

  15. hi well something is going to happen in 2012. remember th mayans met a race sometime back in their history they called the brothers from the stars and they said that this race will be coming back to earth someday.2012 maybe? anyways given the fact that mankind lately aint been doing to well with giving into every craving and desire imaginable which i attribute to a virus attacking us in a way not previously thought of well….this is interesting cause newsweek and time put out an article about how we just installed a super advanced telescope up in orbit that will allow us within two years time to know for certain that extraterrestials exist so….

  16. Patricia said:

I cannot believe someone used star trek as a reference, please tell it was sarcasm.

Anyway, I believe it’s more the end of an era they were predicting rather than the end of the world.

2012 is for real I will be glad to explain this in technical terms and will break it down for you.People are fooled after hearing the world will end in 2000 with computers not being able to roll over this was a lie persued by mr.gates and family to dissolve ,Main frame enviroment and allow servers to take over.which he did. very clever, that it what I call using all of your resources,to get what you want, what did they call him with Steven Jobs,mr mac, raiders of silicon valley, why because they new how to minipulate the press and of course the press ate it up,selling newspapers.etc.NOW BEFORE I PROCEED THERE IS ONE OTHER THING I WOULD LIKE TO ADD.APPLE COMPUTERS GENERALLY HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH VIRUSES.BULL HOCKEY ,THERE JUST I’SNT ENOUGH OF THEM TO CONSTITUTE SUCH A CLAIM,there 100.000.00 microsoft, ops there for every one mac,os, Back to our original discussion boy who cried wolf, many times the world was suppose to end,now ,after all this how can people possibly believe anything anyone says.time for a reality check!!!!

Our sun will be crossing the galactic center (The center of our galaxy), or the galactic equator around the date of 2012. The winter solstice. This process will take around 38 years for our solar system to pass through the galactic center. This happens every 220 million years? correct me if I am wrong. The Mayan’s called this place of space and time “The road to the underworld”. What this means is open to interpretation. It could signify a time of great change. It could be a time of great destruction. One theory is the Earth could suffer from a polar shift. A polar shift would cause massive electrical failure and great flooding. Another theory is the sun will produce massive solar flares and or radiation. One thing is for certain. The sun will be crossing the very center of out galaxy. What will happen? No one knows for certain. Make up your own minds and do the research…

  21. Shane said:

In refrence to my last statement. We will not be crossing into the galactic center. That would suck us into the black hole. Our sun will be in direct alignment with the galactic center. This happens every 26,000 years.

The Mayan’s predicted the end of an age. Whatever that may mean. The Mayan’s 5,126 year long count calendar comes to an end. Marking the end of an era. Ancient “mythology” suggests that the Mayan “god’s” shall return. Could these “god’s” be alien’s? The Mayan’s “mythology” also say’s that They were visited by “star brother’s”. Could these star brothers be alien beings? And could it all be true and not mythology? How did the Mayan’s have such advanced astronomical knowledge? How did they even know there were 365 day’s in a year? They did! The ancient Mayan “god” , Itzamna, was credited with bringing the Calendar to the Mayan’s. Along with writing and other aspects of Mayan culture. Itzamna was believed to be the creator and he resided in the sky…Is it so hard to believe that our ancient ancestors were visited by another much more advanced race from another world? Did our ancient ancestors mistake these “alien” beings as gods? It was said that these “god’s” would someday return. As would the “star brothers”…Is it mythology or is it history?

  23. Shane said:

The world will not end. The end of the cycle to the Mayan’s was actually a good thing. And it was celebrated! It is a time to be harmonious with ourselves, with others and with nature. It is a time of transformation and renewal. The creation of a new world age. The Mayan’s and the Hopi DO NOT predict that everything will end…

  24. Shane said:

So instead of worrying about what will happen on December 21, 2012, at 11:11 am GMT. We should be worrying about getting there. And the transformation we as humans must make to be better people. So when the clock strikes 11:11 am on December 21, 2012. Celebrate! We made it through another cycle and it is time for a change…

The Mayan Calendar is open to a LOT of debate. First of all, there are no Mayans around, or decendants of Mayans to ask about their cultural background, beliefs, written language or system of mathematics. For whatever reason the Mayans just vanish from history, leaving behind huge cities and written records of some sort. This leaves a lot of problems for trying to figure out what they even believed. For example could you imagine if our society were to just pick up stakes and move and the only record left behind were science fiction novels? What would a society 1000 years from now think we believed or were capable of? If our society would have ended in 1990 a society 1000 years from now would have thought what about the “millenium bug”- would they have figured we thought the world would end in 2000 because of the way we wrote our computer programs? We don’t even know for a fact that we are reading their calendar correctly, maybe the date they were writting is really 4012 and we are reading it wrong. Even if we are reading it correctly, their calendar streched thousands of years into the future, it could have “ended” when it did because they saw no use in extending it futher as it was so far in the distant future to them anyway. It could be that at the “end” of the calendar you are supposed to start back at the begining again only adding something on to it for the “next cycle”. We constantly find that we have made translations errors on things that are much more recient than the Mayan calendar, and for civilizations that still exist to this day so how do we know we are reading their language correctly that 2012 is supposed to be the end of an age? There are far too many variables to take into account to really take the Mayan calendar seriously.
